Fenerbahce SK History

The Fenerbahçe Sports Club was founded in May 1907, with the intention of supporting multiple sporting codes. After more than a century in operation the multi-sport club has a number of active departments, including basketball, swimming, and volleyball.

The football team has been a persistent threat since the very beginning of the Super Lig era. Sarı Kanaryalar (The Yellow Canaries) were the inaugural champions of the Turkish top flight in 1959 and also claimed half of the first dozen league titles after the league’s inception.

Fenerbahce won another three Super Lig titles in the 80s and a further four in the 2000s. The Istanbul club has ended runners-up on no fewer than 24 occasions, significantly more than any other team in the history of the competition.

The Yellow Canaries were crowned champions of the Turkish top flight for a record-equalling 19th time in 2014, though local rivals Galatasaray have since gone on to reclaim top spot in that regard.

At continental level, Fenerbahce haven’t wowed the football world by any stretch. The furthest the club has progressed in the UEFA Champions League era was to the quarter-finals in 2007/08. The men in yellow were beaten by eventual finalists Chelsea. Five years later Fenerbahce reached the Europa League semi-finals, where they lost to SL Benfica.

The Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium first opened back in 1908, and it has been the home ground of Fenerbahce ever since. This 50,000-seater venue is one of the largest stadiums in Turkey and attracts a terrific atmosphere on any given matchday.
