Sultan Mehmet II ( Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror )
On March 30, 1432, Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror was born at Edirne, the Ottoman Empire’s capital at the time. Sultan Murad II, his father, ruled the Ottoman Empire. Mehmed remained in Edirne until he was two years old. In 1434, he and his younger brother Alaeddin Ali were brought to Amasya, where his 14-year-old older brother Ahmad served as the administrator of a sanjak.
Mehmed’s father appointed a number of teachers to help him with his studies. However, Mehmed was difficult to teach since he was as aggressive as he was smart. Mehmed received instruction from both Western and Islamic instructors. The Ottoman emperor’s contributions to philosophy, art, and science are equally recognized, even though his military victories receive the most of the credit.
Many people interpret Mehmet’s alleged fluency in Persian, Arabic, ancient Greek, and Italian as evidence of his ambition to establish an empire that would encompass both the West and the East.
According to Turkish historians, the books in his library covered subjects like mathematics, philosophy, engineering, astronomy, arithmetic, geography, archeology, and religion.
The conqueror was a well-known poet who also had a strong interest in the arts, as seen by his commission to have his picture painted by Renaissance artist Bellini. After reading extensively about Alexander the Great’s military campaigns, the Ottoman monarch may have been influenced by the life of the legendary leader in his quest to establish an empire.
Ptolemy’s antique world map is thought to have been one of the treasures in his collection, along with Homer’s Iliad and other books.
